Journey of the ‘tenured’ student: A decade of learning

It all began in 2004 with my enrollment in Peninsula College’s multimedia program.

In the past decade I have earned four degrees including my recent BAS bachelor’s degree this June.

What an educational ride it’s been! I’ve outlasted all my former classmates and some faculty too.

What I’ve learned: Student services are your friend. Plan ahead; get your FAFSA done early.

Register the instant you are able. Need a flexible schedule? Pursue classes online. Get a work study job. Rent your textbooks.

Take every class Janet Lucas teaches. Your life will be enriched. Enroll in sociology; it’s the most interesting face to face class you can take besides photography.

My college experiences have opened doors in the newspaper industry and now in the healthcare field.

My BAS education has contributed greatly towards my entrepreneurial goals for my own soap and natural care business Treat Yourself Right.

I am grateful for the opportunities my education continues to unfold to me. Journalism and my time as managing editor for The Buccaneer changed my life. I thank Rich Riski, Frank Garred and Bonne Smith for their commitment to student newspapers and journalism.

I want to thank Professor Ed Jaramillo for being my advisor and friend all these years.

Last words of advice:

Always remember to have a big heart for whatever you do. Have compassion. Be passionate and kind.

Know that nothing lasts forever. Embrace this moment. And thank your teachers for their commitment to your needs, future goals and life successes ahead.
