The Associated Student Council is continuing its sponsorship of Sierra Leonean fifth-grade student, Alhassan Turay, 12.

The ASC has been sponsoring Turay with a $43 donation, plus school supplies once a month for the past three years through Children of the Nations.

The money comes from school dances, and supply drives held in the PUB.

“His orphanage was quarantined during the Ebola outbreak. They’re in a better position now. They’re accepting donations now; we sent them some school supplies and a soccer ball from a drive we did that went very well,” said Sydney Roberts, ASC president.

The Student Council has set up a tentative scholarship fund for Turay.

“Some of our leftover funds that were raised through events go into an account for a scholarship, whether that be a semester abroad or 2 years at PC.

It’s not a sure thing because we don’t know if he would be able to get a student visa but we’re working towards it,” said Roberts.

Turay was chosen by the ASC in early 2013 because of his character attributes of being friendly, helpful, intelligent, obedient and responsible as given by Children of the Nation’s website, cotni.org.
