PUB nets $25K furniture upgrade

By Melissa Copeland

New furniture will be purchased to replace the cushioned chairs and couches in the PUB.

The furniture currently in the PUB has been there since the PUB was opened in the year 2000.

The furniture is falling apart due to the heavy use of the thousands of students who have used the furniture over the past 16 years.

“This is a project we’ve been looking at for some time and I’m thrilled that Sydney [Roberts] and her team took it on,” Associated Student Council Adviser Rick Ross said.

“The furniture has held up well for 16 years, but it can no longer be cleaned up the way it should, and some of the furniFurniture2 M.C. copyture structure is also failing.

“Our goal was to find high quality, durable, functional and attractive furniture for the next 16 years, and I believe Sydney and the ASC has accomplished that with this first step of a PUB furniture replacement plan.

“Next up will be the wood tables and chairs and the round cafeteria tables and chairs, but we’re hoping to get a few more years out of those.”

This project will cost approximately $25,000 and will be paid for out of the

ASC reserve account. The new furniture will be bought through KI, a contract furniture company that specializes in business furniture, university furniture, educational furniture, healthcare furniture and government furniture.

The ASC has already picked out the color pallet and style of the new furniture that will hopefully be available for student use in a few months.

The material of the new furniture for the PUB will be three different colors of vinyl with an accent fabric for the arm rest, along with a patterned fabric for the ottomans that will compliment the chairs and loveseats being replaced.

The new furniture will be durable to withstand the wear and tear students will put into them.

According to Ross, the ASC will go through the state’s surplus protocol for any of the current furniture in the PUB that still has value.

“As a state institution, we’re not allowed to sell state property to individuals, so when we get rid of things, we either take them to a landfill, or surplus them,” Ross said.

“Students are welcome to come to the ASC office with questions regarding the new furniture” said ASC President Sydney Roberts, the main driving force of the project.
