College ‘plunders’ Pirate Cove Cafe

Peninsula College and Joy Production, the company that owns the Pirate Cove Cafe, have decided to part ways.

As of June 30, the contract that binds them together expires.

Peninsula College will take over operations and the former Pirate Cove Cafe will be under construction throughout the summer quarter.

Peninsula College plans to make some changes to the cafe, starting with re-branding the name to The Bookaneer Market & Deli.

Pirate Cove Cafe owner, Jill Salgado, says a high-point during her time here was, “Getting involved with athletics, and making friends with staff and students.

“I really enjoyed being involved with the Rumble in the Rainforest fundraiser the last three years.”

Salgado says she plans to apply for a position at the new deli.

Students are going to see many new things in the cafe including salads, sandwiches and fresh fruits and vegetables from Country Aire Natural Foods.

There will also be self-serve coffee in addition to the espresso and a fountain machine for soda will be added for student’s convenience. The snack bar that is currently located in The Bookaneer will be moved to the new cafe.

“The construction will start during the summer quarter and will open on August 21,” Bookanee Store Manager Camilla Rico said.

“Although the cafe will be closed, the walk up window should be open for business exclusively for coffee,” Rico said.

“Peninsula College understands that the cafe is important to students, as there are no restaurants or convenient stores within a close proximity to campus.

“The Bookaneer Market & Deli will also offer longer hours of operation after it re-opens.

“Monday’s hours are 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Tuesday’s are 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.”

With the re-branding, Peninsula College will have to hire new staff to work in the cafe.

“We will have to re-hire and we’ll look for people with experience in this field,” Rico said, “the first full time position will be available on the Peninsula College HR [Human Resources] website sometime this month.

“The other four part time positions will be announced sometime next month through the HR website, anyone who feels they qualify are encouraged to apply.

“The profits will help support Peninsula Campus Operations. The construction will most likely last throughout the summer. There will be training over the summer and possibly limited service. The Market and Deli should be fully operational by Fall quarter.”
