Matthew Richards, Peninsula College running start sophomore and Sequim High School senior, competed at the WIAA State 2A Boys Tennis tournament, placing eighth out of 16 competitors for boys singles.

Richards placed fifth at districts and competed at the University of Washington campus Nordstrom Tennis Center over the last weekend of May.

Losing his first match on Friday, 6-3, 6-2, and winning his second, 4-6, 7-5, with a super-tiebreaker of 12-10 and also his third with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 10-5, moving him onto the second day of the tournament where he lost to the fifth place finisher 6-0, 6-2 putting him in eighth place.

Richards said, “I was a little slow getting started in each match, but I was able to find my opponent’s weakness and that helped me get back in the game and win. The ones who beat me deserved to.”
