Past, present & future; medical kits save lives, more units to come

By Ivan Sitohang

Medical kits and automated external defibrillator (AED) are both crucial features of campus safety. Medical kits are used daily, while the AED have been used twice in Peninsula College, it was last used back in 2011 to save a Peninsula College staff member.

Despite the importance, Medical kits are not available in every room in the College. Campus Safety Operations Manager, Marty Martinez said “They (medical

kits) are not required to be in every room. They just have to be reasonably placed in each building so they are accessible to everyone.”

Martinez explained that most medical kits can be found in between classroom spaces and hallways.

Martinez also points out that AEDs are not in every building, but they cover most areas on Campus.

“We placed them so they’re kind of in between. They’re staggered so if we needed to get one quickly we could,” he said. Peninsula College currently has AEDs located in the PUB Building, Keegan Hall, Maier Hall, Fitness Center, Welding building and Sigmar field.

The Campus safety department is planning to add three more AEDs for the college.

Two will be located in the new Allied Health Center, with one each for the Educare center and nursing site.

The other one will be placed in the Student Services Building.
