Peninsula College’s dance team made their debut performance during the Feb. 8 basketball game halftime show. The dance featured an array of dances and music from Latin pop to a throwback Michael Jackson hit.

The group’s presence on the dance floor definitely showed a strong bond between the members. Jacob Kennedy, Mya DeLano, Kylie Graham, Stephanie Lacour, Marcus DeLano, Katie Rogers and Mark Gerrie, however Gerrie was unable to perform in the halftime show due to conflicting schedules.

The group started off with Stephanie Lacour and Marcus DeLano performing a piece with a mix of latin and hip/hop styles. The duo dazzled the crowd with some jaw dropping spins and dips.

The music then transitioned from Latin to the popular song “Handclap” by Fitz and the Tantrums. Kylie Graham, Mya DeLano and Katie Rogers performed as a group for most of the song, however, each had the chance to showcase their abilities with a small solo.

Jacob Kennedy then stole the crowd’s attention as he moon walked across the floor to the hit song “Beat It” by the infamous Michael Jackson. Kennedy’s routine was definitely reminiscent of the great Pop King, however he definitely made his mark by adding his own style to the classic Jackson moves.

The team came together as a group for the final part of the performance. They put everything they had on the floor, the high energy of the dance and bright smiles of the performers made for a great halftime show.

“I love being apart of the dance team, it’s super fun making moves up and working on them with good friends,” said Graham, “I’m actually shocked we got the whole dance together in time because we goofed offs most the time, but we focused when we needed too. It’s been unforgettable.”

“The Basketball games needed a halftime show,” said Kennedy, “ Our first performance went really smoothly and I’m excited to see what we come up with in the future.” Jacob Kennedy is the president of the group with Mya DeLano as the choreographer and unofficial team leader. Marcus DeLano is also head of all things tech.

“I love that I get to be part of creating a show using my talents to bring joy to others,” said Marcus DeLano. The Peninsula College Dance club and performing team will be holding tryouts sometime early Spring quarter. The team hopes to have the opportunity to perform at other events at Peninsula College as well as soccer games come Fall quarter.

“My passion is to dance and inspire others to pursue their dreams,” said Mya DeLano.
