Ugly sweater weather

By Saki Kambe

With the delightful “Jingle Bell Rock,” the Ugly Sweater Cake Walk started at 12:45 p.m. with 11 participants.

Approaching the end of the fall quarter, Associated Student Council (ASC) hosted the cake walk on Dec 5, in the PUB recreation area.

The PUB was crowded, and a little chaotic because of two other events that were happening: the Nursing Program’s presentation for this quarter, and the Student Massage Day.

The participants were walking around a circle of numbered paper plates. When they started to get into the rhythm, the music stopped, and an ASC member drew and shouted the first number.

Numbers were called out one after another, and all the participants who were on that number plate were given college students’ needs such as socks, bath towels, toilet paper and carefree staple food like cereal and cup of noodles as a prize.

“We are giving out stuff that college students want, but don’t want to pay for,” said the ASC advisor, Jeremiah Johnson.

Having heard the joyful songs, claps and the shouts of random numbers, there were a couple students who joined in midway, instantly getting the beat and walking around the circle to another song that played, “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.”

There were approximately 20 students who participated in total, and prizes were even handed out to the three students who remained.

“Just because it is the finals week and I was stressed out, this event made me happy because they gave some free gifts. I want to participate again if there is another chance,” says Eunbin Park, one of the new international students from South Korea.
