Pirate Picks: Three skills

By Judah Breightbach

Our staff asked 78 professors, faculty and administrators for three skills that, in their opinion, are essential to adult survival. There were no prompts in our question, giving those willing to answer the freedom to offer their true opinion. 15.38% of them responded to our email – some with three, others with four (even professors have a hard time following the rules).
We had to organize the categories allowing for synonyms. The communications category led the way with interpersonal communications, writing, humor, eloquence and more shadowed under it’s umbrella. After a sizable gap comes the empathy category, containing votes for reflection, non-judgemental attitude and servant leadership. Close behind is discipline with work ethic, grit, resourcesfulness and others under its wing. Next is the misecellaneous group which held political savvy, computer skills, love of learning and more. Among the stragglers was critical thinking with problem solving and decision making its only two facets. In a dead tie for last place are financial skills and organizational skills.
