Student Arts Week captivated attendees with an array of artistic demonstrations from June 2 to June 9. The celebration included performances from music and drama students, a sidewalk chalk art contest, a display of student art in the PUB Art Gallery, metal sculptures from welding students, a student film festival, and awards for the best English essays.

The PC Jazz Ensemble performed for PUB attendees June 2. Sequim resident John Meier wished “there were concerts open to the public more often.” Band member Mike Ehr said, “It was nice to see a lot of people, and to see the kids dancing.”

The college campus was bright and full of color as students adorned the pavement in front of the PUB with creative works of chalk art. Participants competed for prizes of $50, $30, or $15, which were awarded to the top 3. First place went to Alysha Graham for her beautiful, flowery work of art. Second went to Joanna Vidals for “A New Beginning”, featuring a mother and baby elephant.

Third place went to Jordan Scott for “Creation-Past-Present”. Faculty members Reina Barreto and Barbara Blackie judged the contest, and, according to Professor Blackie, “really had to just stop and choose, because there were a lot of good ones.”

Welding students worked in groups to create some impressive metal sculptures for art week. The sculptures will be for sale in a silent auction starting at $50.

The PUB Gallery features a variety of student art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photos. The Award Presentation and Artist Reception will be on June 10 at 4 pm in the PUB Gallery of Art.

The Outstanding English Essay Award was given to Kim Brisbois, Eric Trent, Josie Padgett and Devyn Turner. Kim Brisbois took First Place, winning a prize of $200 for her essay “A Melting Pot Identity Crisis”, which tackles issues of our country’s multi-cultural background. The next 3 winners all tied for Second Place, winning $50 each. The four winners will be presented with their awards on June 11.

June 11 will feature a special Studium Generale presentation for the Student Arts Festival at 12:30 pm.

On June 12, the new Tidepools Art, Literature and Music magazine will be released at a 7 pm event at the Raymond Carver Room of the P.A. Public Library.
