Peninsula men’s basketball has big sneakers to fill this offseason after losing nine sophomores from its North Region championship team.

Head Coach Mitch Freeman has already found two big men to help fill those Shaq-sized shoes.

The first is Sam Velez, a 6-foot-8 rebounding monster from Summit Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Velez, “Led the entire state of Utah in rebounding this past season and helped Summit win a state championship this year,” Freeman said. “He brings a physical presence inside that we need.”

The second signee is Kevin Baker, a 6-foot-7 forward from Kentlake High School in Kent, Wash.

Baker is, “A versatile four-man that can step out and shoot it or post up on the block,” Freeman said. “Great student, great kid! We are excited to have him.”

Freeman also has a couple other players in his sights.

“We are in the recruiting process with several prospects that include an athletic perimeter player and another rebounder,” Freeman said.
