Peninsula College put on its third annual Pirate Zombie Run on May 7.
The 5k race invites men, women and children to run through mud, over obstacles and away from zombies.
“Well, it was pretty hard,” Josiah Urquia said. “The tall black guy at the end of the race, he was crazy hard! I had him on the right, bam, he put me to the left.
“Suddenly I lost one of my flags! Then those tires, that mud. It was intense!”
The 2016 Pirate Zombie Mud Run had 336 runners and over 500 onlookers, breaking previous attendance records.
“It was our most successful zombie run overall,” Newly elected ASC President Zak Hoskins said.
The race brought in $8,030, which all goes back to the ASC collection so that this event can happen next year.
Each year there are three races put on; the Creepy Crawler Kids Run, the Family Fun Run and the Run for Your Life Adult Run.
The winners for this year’s Boys Creepy Crawler Kids Run were 1st place Zane Markley, 2nd place Aiden Johnson, 3rd place Palmer Kohout.
For the girls group, the winners were 1st place Kali Ellis, 2nd place Lily Lopez, 3rd place Nevea Thurman. This year’s Family Fun Run winners were 1st place, Jaiden Albin and Ivy Barrett; 2nd place, Russell Gaither and Hannah Wagner; and 3rd place, Lake Barrett and Trinity Gaither.
The winners for the adult race were 1st place, Liam Bryme and Kirsten McGuffey; 2nd place, Ryker Pierce and Audrey Barham; and 3rd place, Steve Boyd and Molly Joyce.
“ It was very enjoyable, minus the zombies,” student Heidi Vereide said. “But it overall was a great race. The weather was fantastic. Great event! I hope they do it again.”
